The Supreme Court has denied cert in the "Ghost Hunters" case. Larry Montz claimed that NBC and others, who eventually created the series "Ghost Hunters," now running on the SyFy network, were uninterested in his idea for a series based on a parapsychologist who investigates the paranormal when they first heard about it, finally dismissing the idea in 2003. In 2004, "Ghost Hunters" debuted.
Mr. Montz and his producer Deana Smoller lost in the trial court but the Ninth Circuit reversed the judgment on breach of contract and breach of confidence claims, in line with earlier cases (Desny and Grosso). Hollywood Reporter's Eriq Gardner explains why NBC Universal appealed to the Supreme Court, and why, in the "Ghost Hunters" case, the issues matter so much for the parties, and for so many other writers, studios, and producers.
