So, witchcraft is a legal profession in Romania now, as is astrology, according to the Romanian Labor Code. According to backers of the law, the new measure is an attempt to get folks in these professions to pay taxes. That makes sense to me. I've always maintained that, at least here in the U.S., apart from constitutional problems with banning belief in the occult and the prohibition of occult and crafty sciences practices, the government has other problems with the area. So, if the concern is consumer fraud, why not license the practitioners and collect the cash?
What I'm not sure I understand, at least based on news reports (and they're scarce on the ground--all the reports that I've seen seem to be based on the same AP release), is the reaction of one practicing witch, who said, "that she plans to cast a spell using black pepper and yeast to create discord in the government." Why? She can practice her trade and/or religion. What is she upset about? That she has to pay taxes on her income? Does she think witches are being discriminated against? Without more information, I just don't see how. Look at the other people recognized as professionals in the new law and required to pay up as well: driving instructors, valets and embalmers.
