For an example of a critically thinking character on tv, check out Dr. Julia Ogden (Keely Hawes) on the series The Murdoch Mysteries, set in 1890s Toronto. She's the coroner and love interest of police officer William Murdoch (Peter Outerbridge), and helps him solve all sorts of odd crimes. Not for Dr. Ogden the belief in the paranormal. She trusts to science, as does Detective Murdoch, who loves chemistry and gadgets, which are prominently featured on the series. What does bring them into conflict somewhat is his strongly held Catholic faith. From what I have seen so far, she seems less religious. DVDs of the first and second season are available.
