The parents of a sixteen-year-old who died from complications following a bladder infection have turned themselves in after a local judge issued warrents for their arrests. Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Beagley surrended to authorities and will face charges in the death of their son Neal. He passed away in June.
The Beagleys attend the Followers of Christ Church, which accepts the notion that Christ will heal by faith. Thus they did not seek traditional medical attention for their son when he fell ill. I've blogged about this case in the past, and the legal position that the parents maintain. This case is a tragedy for everyone concerned. I have no doubt that these parents cared and care deeply for their son, truly accepted the tenets of their faith, and thought they were making the best decision that they could. But their son is dead now. When, if ever, should the state intervene in such cases? Is a sixteen year old old enough to make such medical decisions for himself or herself? Does freedom of religion trump health care decisions? Does an individual ever have informed consent in such cases?
