Remember the Dick Van Dyke episode, "Give Me Your Walls!", in which Rob and Laura hire a painter (the wonderful Vito Scotti) to paint their living room? For days he does everything but, including entertaining Richie and cooking meals. Finally the couple gets up the courage to demand that he finish up, and so he does. His work is great except for a "blob" on one wall; as it turns out, that's his signature, and he charges exactly what he originally asked.
Rob and Laura's painter reminds me of the one Richard Scanlon describes in his New York Times essay "The Job Was Simple. The Painter Wasn't," although Mr. Scanlon's painter scarfs up a hamburger, vodka and computer time, apparently without entertaining anyone. Mr. Scanlon doesn't mention children, and I assume there's not even a cat to enjoy and/or evaluate painterly antics. Mr. Scanlon's painter takes weeks; I'm happy the result was worth it.
